A day trip to Broadway in the Cotswolds, a 20-year-old Bentley Continental, and the brief — full machine polish and a 3-year ceramic coating to bring the paintwork back to life. Even after two decades on the road, the result was sparkling.

The Brief: A Cotswolds Classic Worth Restoring

The car in question was a 20-year-old Bentley Continental, a true grand tourer that deserves proper care. The owner wanted to restore the depth and gloss of the original paintwork rather than just giving it a quick clean.

We travelled to Broadway to carry out the work. We cover the wider Cotswolds, including Broadway, Moreton-in-Marsh, Evesham, Stow-on-the-Wold, and surrounding villages. Because this was a mobile detail, the car never had to leave the owner's driveway.

Stage One: Safe Wash and Decontamination

We started with a pre-wash using snow foam to lift loose grime safely from the paintwork. This was followed by a two-bucket contact wash with pH-neutral shampoo to ensure no further damage was done to the clear coat.

Next came the decontamination stage. We used an iron fallout remover and clay treatment to pull bonded contaminants out of the clear coat. This stage is non-negotiable before polishing — you simply can't correct paint you haven't properly cleaned.

Stage Two: Machine Polishing 20 Years of Defects

Under our detailing lights, we mapped out the swirl marks, holograms, light scratches, and oxidation that are typical of two-decade-old paint. It was clear the paint needed careful attention to bring back its original lustre.

We performed a multi-stage machine polish using a dual-action polisher with appropriate cutting and finishing pads, removing the defects layer by layer. We exclusively use SONAX polishing compounds, as we are a SONAX-certified detailer.

The difference once the paint was leveled was night and day. The depth, clarity, and the original factory gloss returned panel by panel, revealing the true beauty of the Bentley's paintwork.

Stage Three: Applying a 3-Year Ceramic Coating

Before applying the coating, we used an IPA panel wipe to remove any polish residues and ensure a chemically clean surface. We then applied a 3-year professional ceramic coating, panel by panel, allowing proper levelling times.

This coating gives the owner incredible hydrophobic water behaviour, easier maintenance washes, UV protection, and a deep liquid-glass finish that protects the freshly corrected paint. We finished by handing over curing time instructions and aftercare guidance to the owner.

The Result: A Sparkling Finish on a 20-Year-Old Car

The transformation was stunning. Paint that had looked tired and flat was now reflecting like a mirror. The reflections, depth, and clarity are something owners often assume only new cars can have.

It was one happy Bentley owner and one very satisfying day in the Cotswolds. It's a great reminder that age doesn't define a car's potential — careful preparation and the right products do.
